Home Visiting and Family Support Services
Health Visiting team

The Sure Start health visiting team is based in the Aylesbury Health Centre. They are registered general nurses with special training to work in the community.

Every family with children under 5 years old has a names Health Visitor who can: Offer antenatal and post natal home visits; offer support and information on parenting; help you cope with and understand babies and young children; advise on immunisation and child development; put you in touch with other helping agencies.

Home Start

Is a voluntary home visiting organisation offering support, friendship and practical help to families with a child under 5 years.

Child and Family Service

Can offer support if you are:

Worried about your child's behaviour - for example tempet tantrums, sleep problems, feeding difficulties, being over-active or too clingy; help you with your relationship with your baby or young children; help you cope with a child who has special needs.

They also offer courses on Coping with Toddlers and other parenting issues.

Contact a Family Southwark

Supports families who have a child with a special need or disability. They offere advice, support and information to families on a range of issues including: Leisure opportunities; childcare; education; health; and social support services.

They also run a weekly toy library for children with special needs based at the Aylesbury Health Centre

KIDS

Provide home learning sessions for children with disabilities and special needs.

They work closely with parents, visiting the home weekly, and through play activities build on the children's existing skilss and teach them new ones.

Speech and Language Therapy

The Sure Start Speech and Language Therapists help parents with the child's sppech and language development.

They offer advice and support for parents and for other staff working with young children as well as direct one to one sessions with children.

Blackfriars Advice Centre

Provides a free, confidential advice service to all Sure Start families.

They cover: Debt; Benefits; Housing; Homelessness and Employment.

You can get information about your rights and help with filling in forms etc..

They hold a drop in advice session on Thursday afternoons between 2pm and 4pm at the Aylesbury Health Centre.

Shaftesbury's Child Safety Scheme

Ask your Sure Start Health Visitor to refer you to this scheme if you need safety equipment for your children such as stair gates, fire guareds, cupboard catches, smoke alarms etc..

Once we receive a referral form an advisor will visit your home and carry out a safety audit.

They will then fit equipment worth up to £60 for items agreed by you for a small fee (£10)

Southwark WelCare

WelCare is a voluntary organisation that provides the opportunity for parents with young children to learn and play together.

They offer a creche while parents can attend a range of workshops and arts and crafts and exercise activities.

WelCare also offers a programme of groups, counselling and support for parents with young children

Bengali Family Support Project

This is for Bengali speaking families and their children.

It offers advice and information about a range of issues including child development, play and early learning, nursery and school enrolment.

There is a drop-in session on Friday mornings 10am - 12noon for parents and children together. The group also offers English (ESOL) as an additional language class on Thursdays.

Smoking Cessation - Help to Stop Smoking

Provides a service for pregnant women and other family members who wish to stop smoking.

They will support you through the process and offer a range of support options such as nicotine replacement therapy patches, gums, etc. Home visits can be arranged
